Les Jardins des Versaille

The museums are not open on Monday, so we decided to visit the Palace of Versaille, just to walk around the gardens, which you are allowed to do on Monday.

The first thing we did when we got there was find a place in the shade in the gardens to have a picnic.  We brought our sandwich on a fresh French baguette, of course, and a bottle of wine, of course.  Roxana had found a Bordeaux from 2000 that she says was one of the best wines she had ever tasted.  Of course, being ten years old, the cork gave me a fit, but we fished the pieces out and enjoyed the wine nonetheless.

It was a bottle of Chateau Tertre Daugay, Grand Cru Classe, 2000, from the Bordeaux region -- excellent.

After lunch, we walked around the gardens, enjoying the sites.  We walked in to a restaurant on the grounds.

We intended to have their sorbet and glace for dessert, which were advertised outside.  But when the waitress came to our table and we ordered, she abruptly told us that we had to eat a full lunch, and we could not just order dessert.  As you can see from the picture above, it wasn't because they were short of tables.  So, we left and saved ourselves a few calories.

The rest of the postcards are some flowers, topiaries, fountains and statuary in the gardens.  If you can imagine, this is a formal garden about the size of Central Park in New York City.  These don't begin to show the scale.

By the way, the Woody Allen movie, A Night in Paris, that we saw shooting in Paris, was also shooting at Versaille.  We saw the same actors and may have even managed to get into the background of one of the shots.  So look for us in the Versaille garden scene.  We're the ones the security person is motioning to get out of the shot.
